9 Days of Wonder

Culture · Nature · Festivals · South & West Coast

You don't need to do much on your first day in Sri Lanka – the island will do it for you. Within twenty minutes of landing at Bandaranaike International Airport you are in Negombo, a languid fishing town of Catholic churches and outrigger canoes that has been greeting travellers for centuries without ever quite losing its unhurried pace.

Spend the evening as the locals do: walking barefoot along the beach as the light turns amber, then sitting down to a lagoon-side seafood dinner where the catch was almost certainly hauled in that morning. For those with energy to spare, a three-hour motor boat tour of the lagoon as the sun drops is one of the gentlest and most evocative introductions to this country you'll find anywhere. An early night is strongly encouraged.

Afternoon
Airport arrival & transfer
20-minute scenic coastal drive to your hotel
Sunset
Optional: Lagoon boat tour
3-hour motor boat through the Negombo lagoon at dusk
Evening
Beach walk & Seafood dinner
Walk barefoot on the sand and enjoy fresh, locally-hauled seafood

The drive south from Negombo down the coast road is one of those journeys where you find yourself staring out of the window far more than you planned. Bentota sits at the mouth of the river of the same name, where the inland waterways and the Indian Ocean meet in a long, palm-fringed estuary.

The Madu River Boat Safari is a genuine highlight: a slow glide through a network of mangrove channels, past a cinnamon island where the bark is still harvested and peeled by hand, and past small communities living lives that haven't changed greatly in generations. A visit to a turtle conservation hatchery in the afternoon gives you a closer look at the extraordinary effort being made to protect Sri Lanka's marine turtles along this stretch of coast. The rest of the afternoon belongs to the beach. Dinner is a kind of informal, generous meal that Sri Lanka does better than almost anywhere.

Galle Fort is one of those places where a single afternoon is both too little and exactly right. Founded in the sixteenth century by the Portuguese and enlarged by the Dutch, the fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that wears its history lightly – its rampart walk has become a favourite evening promenade for locals and visitors alike, with the lighthouse standing sentinel and the sea crashing below.

The best way to explore it is on two wheels. A cycling tour threads you through Dutch-era streets lined with boutiques, galleries and hidden café courtyards, past a working handloom workshop where you can try your hand at the loom itself, and through the museums that tell the fort's layered story. This is not a place to rush. The architecture rewards slow looking, and the light in the late afternoon – when it comes slanting off the white walls and the ocean – is about as close to perfect as travel gets.

Afternoon

Explore the UNESCO World Heritage streets on two wheels
Late Afternoon
Handloom Workshop & Museums
Try traditional weaving and uncover the fort's rich history
Sunset

Mirissa is where the south coast truly exhales. The bay is small and beautiful, framed by the coconut palms of Coconut Tree Hill on one headland and a quiet secret beach on the other that most visitors simply walk past. April's calm seas make this one of the last good months before the southwest monsoon shifts the surfing conditions elsewhere, if you've been meaning to try it, this is your moment.

There is no real agenda here beyond being somewhere lovely. The sunset from the hillside, with the fishing fleet gathering on the horizon, is the kind of scene that stays with you long after you've come home.

Afternoon

The road from Mirissa to Yala is one of transition: from the holiday rhythms of the coast into something older and wilder. There are good reasons to stop en route. The small town of Matara offers a Dutch fort and the unusual Paravi Dupatha temple set on a river island; further on, Mulgirigala is a rock temple complex so seldom visited that you may have its cave shrines and painted reclining Buddhas almost entirely to yourself. It is sometimes called Little Sigiriya, though that rather undersells it. Because of the high wind and extra heated climate Sigiriya is not a best place to vist.

By late afternoon the landscape has shifted to scrub and open grassland. Yala National Park, which has one of the highest densities of leopards of anywhere in the world, begins at the park boundary. The atmosphere changes noticeably as you settle in for the night – the sounds are different here, and the darkness is properly dark.

Morning
Matara & Paravi Dupatha
Stop at the Dutch fort and unique river island temple
Midday
Mulgirigala Rock Temple
Explore quiet cave shrines and painted reclining Buddhas
Late Afternoon

Transition into scrub landscape as you arrive at your lodge

There is a particular quality to a Yala morning – the air still cool, the light low and golden, the park's residents going about their business as though the jeep barely exists. Leopards are the headline act, but Yala's elephants, sloth bears and painted storks are equally worth the early start. The jeep safari begins before sunrise and ends when the heat rises; it is one of the best ways to spend a morning in Sri Lanka, full stop.

The long drive north to Nuwara Eliya passes through some of the island's most celebrated scenery. Stop at Ravana Falls, a wide, thundering curtain of water made more atmospheric in the wet inter monsoon season and detour via the Ella Gap for views over the Nine Arch Bridge, perhaps the most photographed structure in the country. By the time you reach Nuwara Eliya, the air has turned cool and the road is lined with tea bushes in every direction. The plantation visit makes sense of it all: the terraced hillsides, the women with their baskets, the factory smell of oxidising leaves. A very different Sri Lanka from the one you woke up in.

Midday

This is why you chose April. Sinhala and Tamil New Year is the most important festival in the Sri Lankan calendar, and Nuwara Eliya – with its large Tamil community and its deeply rooted traditions – is one of the finest places to be when it arrives. There are auspicious times for everything: for lighting the hearth, for the first meal of the new year, for commencing work, for anointing with oil. The rituals are observed with a seriousness that coexists naturally with a great deal of noise and happiness.

People dress in traditional attire and you join a village celebration that includes cooking Kiribath the milk rice prepared for every auspicious occasion and taking part in the village games that have been played at New Year for as long as anyone can remember: pillow fighting, tug of war, coconut scraping. Visits to both a Hindu Kovil and a Buddhist temple during this shared festival are a reminder of what makes it so remarkable. This is not a performance staged for visitors. It is the real thing, and you are warmly welcome in it.

Morning
Traditional Rituals & Kiribath
Observe auspicious timings, light the hearth, and cook milk rice
Midday
Village Games
Join the locals in pillow fighting, tug of war, and coconut scraping
Afternoon
Temple & Kovil Visits
Experience shared spiritual celebrations at both Buddhist and Hindu shrines
✨ Whatever else you remember from this journey, you will remember the 13th of April.

💡 Local Tip

Be prepared to eat a lot of sweets! Locals will generously offer you traditional festive treats like Kavum and Kokis.

The road from Nuwara Eliya to Kandy descends through some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. Ramboda Falls tumbles dramatically through the gorge below, and the Bluefield Tea Gardens offer a chance to stop and look back at the valley you've just left. The Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple at Ramboda, peacefully set above the road, is one of those quiet, undemanding stops that turn out to be memorable precisely because they asked nothing of you.

Kandy is the cultural capital of Sri Lanka, and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic which houses the Buddha's tooth and sits at the centre of one of the most important pilgrimage traditions in Buddhist Asia, is its spiritual heart. An evening Kandyan cultural dance show, with its extraordinary costumes, drumming and fire-walking finale, is the kind of thing that sounds like a tourist attraction until you're sitting in front of it, completely absorbed.

The final stretch back to Colombo passes through two of Sri Lanka's most rewarding stops. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage does important rehabilitation and rescue work, and the experience of watching Sri Lanka's largest land animals bathing in the river is genuinely extraordinary. The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, one of the finest in Asia, offer a last hour of calm: century-old trees, an avenue of royal palms, orchid houses and the kind of considered beauty that rewards an unhurried wander.

Colombo, for those with time before their flight, is a city in the middle of a confident reinvention – the Pettah markets, the colonial fort district and the Beira Lake waterfront all reward a final afternoon of wandering. Then the 35-kilometre drive to the airport, the slow climb away from the island, and the realisation that nine days was just long enough to understand what you'd need a lifetime to fully know.

Morning
Botanical Gardens & Pinnawala Elephants Orphanage
Watch elephants bathe and wander the century-old Peradeniya gardens
Afternoon
Colombo City Tour
Explore Pettah markets, the colonial fort district, and Beira Lake
Evening
Airport Transfer
Drive to Bandaranaike International Airport for your departure
