    About:Once a towering 7-storey structure with 1,000 rooms, the remaining massive brick walls (now 3 storeys high) still showcase the architectural power of the 12th century. Nearby, the Kumara Pokuna (Royal Bath) features sophisticated ancient plumbing.

    About:Located at the far northern end of the city, these often-overlooked sites contain the most delicate artistry in Polonnaruwa. The Tivanka Image House holds rare 12th-century frescoes — the only ones of their kind in the city. The Lotus Pond is a small, beautifully preserved stone bath carved in the shape of an eight-petalled lotus flower.

    About:A colossal man-made reservoir built by King Parakramabahu the Great in the 12th century to make the kingdom self-sufficient in agriculture. Actually five tanks linked together — Thopa Wewa, Erabadu Wewa, Dumbutulu Wewa, Kalahagala Wewa, and Bhu Wewa — creating one of the largest ancient irrigation systems in the world. Covers approximately 2,500 hectares. Built on the king's philosophy: "not a single drop of water falling from the sky should flow into the ocean without serving the people."
