Before You Go
Good To Know
Arrive at Temple During Pooja
The drumming ceremonies at the Temple of the Tooth happen at 5:30 AM, 9:30 AM, and 6:30 PM. Plan your visit to coincide with one of these for a truly moving experience.
Dress Code at Temples
Cover your shoulders and knees when visiting the Temple of the Tooth and Buddhist centres. Bring or wear a light scarf or sarong — available near the entrance if needed.
Best Time of Day
Morning departures suit the Botanical Gardens and Tea Museum (cooler, fewer crowds). Afternoon runs are ideal for hilltops and the lake — catch the golden hour light.
Carry Small Change
Some attractions may have small entrance fees or donation boxes. Having cash in smaller denominations (50–500 LKR notes) makes things smooth and hassle-free.
Photography Tips
Photography inside the Temple of the Tooth relic chamber may be restricted. Viewpoints like Bahirawakanda and Nelligala offer the most dramatic shots during the hour before sunset.
Gems & Workshops — No Obligation
The Gem Centre and wood carving workshop are genuinely educational stops. You are never obliged to purchase anything — enjoy the demonstrations and stories at your own pace.
