Ramayana Trail Itinerary - 7 Days in Sri Lanka

Day 1: Airport → Colombo

Kelaniya Temple, Colombo: This temple venerates Prince Vibhishana, crowned ruler of Lanka after aiding Lord Rama in defeating Ravana. With a dedicated shrine to Vibhishana, worshipped as a deity, the temple is also significant for being visited by Lord Buddha himself.

Day 2: Sigiriya → Dunuwila → Sigiriya

Sigiriya Rock Fortress: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya’s awe-inspiring rock fortress is believed to be a site where Ravana held Sita captive. Its historical and mythological significance makes it an essential stop on the Ramayana Trail.

Day 3: Sigiriya → Dunuwila → Sigiriya

Dunuwila Lake, Matale: This lake is said to be the site where Lord Rama defeated Ravana with his Brahma Astra. Named “Dunuwila” (meaning “arrow lake” in Sinhala), it holds deep ties to the Ramayana’s epic battle narrative.

Day 4: Sigiriya → Trincomalee

Thirukoneswaram Kovil, Trincomalee: Constructed by Agastya Rishi under Lord Shiva’s guidance, this temple reflects Ravana’s devotion. Lord Rama is believed to have installed a lingam here to atone for killing Ravana, a Brahmin, making it a vital spiritual destination.

Day 5: Trincomalee → Nuwara Eliya

Sita Amman Kovil, Sita Eliya: This temple marks the location where Sita, held captive by Ravana, is said to have prayed daily for Lord Rama. A sacred site, it attracts devotees and tourists seeking spiritual connection.

Day 6: Nuwara Eliya → Ella → Galle

Hakgala Botanical Garden: Known as Ashok Vatika in the Ramayana, this garden is believed to be where Sita was held captive. Now a lush haven of exotic plants, it appeals to both nature lovers and those tracing the Ramayana Trail.
Ravana Cave, Ella: Located 2 km from Ella town at the base of a cliff, this cave is said to have been used by Ravana to hide Sita. A popular spot for hikers, it’s a key site on the Ramayana Trail.
Ussangoda Park, Ambalantota: Now a national park, Ussangoda is believed to have been a landing strip for Ravana’s Pushpaka Vimana. Its unique landscape and rich folklore make it a fascinating stop.

Day 7: Galle → Airport

Rumassala, Galle: During the Ramayana war, Hanuman brought a piece of the Himalayas to Lanka, dropping it at Rumassala to provide lifesaving herbs. Today, this hill is known for its exotic Himalayan flora, making it a unique destination.
